E-Tourism Africa officially launched on July 1st in Johannesburg, announcing the 2008-2009 programme of events and conferences. The Southern African conference and training seminars (Sept 1st-5th) will play a key role in preparing the region to be smarter and more effective in the promotion and management of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Lindiwe Mahlangu, the CEO of Johannesburg Tourism Company, said “We want to show the world that Johannesburg will be ICT prepared for the World Cup. We want to be seen as a world class city not only in terms of our infrastructure but also in terms of how tourists and business travelers can book and use the internet for all their Southern African travel”.

From June 3-6th 2008 the Tourism Trust Fund of the European Union hosted a series of E-Tourism Seminars for the Kenya Tourism Sector, which were facilitated by E-Tourism Africa. There were 116 registered delegates from the local travel trade, the Ministry of Tourism and local tourism organizations in a series of seminars that produced lively debate and discussion. The seminars were facilitated by Peter Varlow and Damian Cook, who combined international and local experience to create a highly practical programme. Issues discussed included online sales and marketing, travel distribution, Destination management and in a special day long session, how technology can help manage information in a crisis period...

E-Tourism Africa, a new initiative to develop online travel sales, distribution and marketing across Africa, will be previewed at a Seminar at the Online Travel Distribution Summit in London on the 21st of May 2008.
The new project aims to address the disparity between online tourism sales for African destinations and the rest of the world. With the web now the world’s most popular resource for researching and booking travel, Africa’s share of the online market is disproportionately small.
