The
United Nations World Tourism Organization
UNWTO is a specialised agency of the United Nations and a leading international organisation in
the field of tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and practical source of
tourism know-how. UNWTO plays a central and decisive role in promoting the
development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible
tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of
developing countries.
The Organization encourages the implementation of the
Global Code of Ethics
for Tourism, with a view to ensuring that member countries, tourist destinations and
businesses maximize the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and fully reap
its benefits, while minimizing its negative social and environmental impacts. They have a specific
programme for the development and support of E-Tourism.
NEPAD
(New African Partnership for African Development) is an economic development program of the
African Union. NEPAD's four primary objectives are to eradicate poverty, promote sustainable growth
and development, integrate Africa in the world economy, and accelerate the empowerment of women. It
is based on underlying principles of a commitment to good governance, democracy, human rights and
conflict resolution; and the recognition that maintenance of these standards is fundamental to the
creation of an environment conducive to investment and long-term economic growth. NEPAD seeks to
attract increased investment, capital flows and funding, providing an African-owned framework for
development as the foundation for partnership at regional and international levels.
Tourism is seen as a key economic driver by NEPAD and particular programmes have been created
to develop tourism partnerships, particularly for the coming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
